30 august 2006:
Educating engineers for ITER
In order to reinforce the engineering capabilities needed for ITER construction, EURATOM has implemented a European Fusion Training
Scheme (EFTS), especially covering areas that are critical for the construction of ITER components. Among these challenging topics
are optical diagnostics, which are used on ITER to derive important plasma properties based on the measurement of plasma radiation.
A European consortium of 7 fusion laboratories has been formed to organise the training on Engineering of Optical Diagnostics for
ITER (EODI). In the frame of this EODI training programme, up to 8 young engineers will be trained on various technical issues related
to the design, construction and testing of optical diagnostics for ITER and related components.
Subsequent to the training based on a two- or three-year fixed-term contract, job opportunities both in the ITER team and in the local
research and development teams of the EODI consortium are envisaged.
