Committee on Fusion-Industry (CFI)

Terms of Reference

1. Mandate of the Committee on Fusion-Industry (CFI)

The CFI shall act as a point of contact between the European fusion programme and European industries involved in fusion, as well as a point of contact among these industries, finally advising the Commission, through the CCE-FU, on Fusion-Industry matters.
The terms of reference of the CFI should be revised as soon as a decision on the construction of ITER is taken.

Its tasks shall be to:

  • suggest ways to favour the co-operation, and to foster the best possible gradual transfer of knowledge, between the fusion research institutes and industry;
  • organise seminars for all industries which might be interested to take part in the European fusion programme; utilities should also be invited in order to provide information and advice from the point of view of the potential users;
  • perform such other tasks on Fusion-Industry matters as the Commission may request it to undertake.

2. Membership

2.1 The Committee members shall act in a personal capacity and be appointed by the CCE-FU, upon proposal by the Commission, for a term of two years. Appointments may be renewed to cover the period up to the end of the Specific Programme.

The Committee shall have the following composition:

  • up to six members from relevant European industries and "purchaser organisations", one of whom shall serve as Chairperson;
  • up to three members from the European utilities area;
  • up to six members from the European fusion programme (Commission services, EFDA Close Support Units, Associations).

2.2. Upon proposal by the Commission, the CCE-FU shall appoint the Chairperson of the CFI from among its "industry" members, for a term of two years. Appointments may be renewed to cover the period up to the end of the Specific Programme.

Upon proposal by the Commission, the CFI shall appoint its Vice-Chairperson from among its members, for a term of two years. Appointments may be renewed to cover the period up to the end of the Specific Programme.

2.3. The function of Secretary of the CFI shall be performed, under the authority of the Chairperson, by an official placed by the Commission at the disposal of the CFI for this purpose.

2.4. The Committee may hear experts and organise workshops.

3. CFI Meetings

The Committee shall normally meet at the Commission premises whenever the Chairperson, acting in consultation with the Commission, considers it necessary or when at least a fourth of the members addresses a written request to the Chairperson, but no less than once a year.
