The Safety and Environment Field

Task areas: Safety Analysis and Environmental Impact, Decommissioning and Waste Management, Licensing

The activities in this field are devoted to the safety analysis of fusion devices, in particular ITER, future Fusion Power Plants and IFMIF (the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility), and to progress in understanding and solving the main relevant safety issues. Dedicated research and development for all the main issues and adaptation-development and validation of computer codes are the main activities.

The safety analysis of a nuclear fusion plant includes:

  • Evaluation of inventories (radioactive source terms and energies)
  • Event sequences
  • Deterministic analysis
  • Radiological release inside the plant and possible impact on population and on staff
  • Waste assessment and management

Work in the present phase is mostly in support of the preparation of ITER safety reports. These activities are extremely important in view of the dialogue with the French licensing authorities.
